JOHN HOAR was born in 1947, the son of Frank Hoar, a brilliant watercolorist whose drawings of Bavarian baroque interiors regularly appeared at the Royal Academy.  John learned a great deal from his father on regular sketching holidays in Germany and Italy and they eventually exhibited together in London.  Otherwise self-taught John attended Ruskin Spear's evening classes while making himself familiar with the work of many other leading painters of the day - particularly watercolourists.  John studied architecture at Cambridge University where he was repelled by the doctrinaire and brutalist approach to design and decided there and then to paint.  After he was married John was for a time curator of the Rye Art Gallery in Sussex, but since 1980 he has made his living as a painter.

He has exhibited in many galleries around the country but mainly in London and Dublin.

In 1988 John won first prize at the United Society of Artists' exhibition in London and has recently been elected to membership of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour.
