John (Jack) Palmer lived most of his life in Bideford, where he drew inspiration from the Torridge Estuary and the surrounding landscape. He was unique in his depiction of the delicate, subtle colours of the estuary sunsets and was drawn to the 'big' skies and empty beaches of the area. He worked exclusively in watercolour, never using pencil lines or white body colour but painted directly on to the paper resulting in the luminosity and immediacy characteristic of watercolour. In addition to becoming a well-known painter locally, his work was accepted frequently to hang in the London exhibitions of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour. The paintings on display were collected from his portfolio after his death, hence some are not signed, however, all are authenticated by his son Gabriel Palmer.
